SUMMARY:

         It is generally considered that the cat is an unintelligent animal which loves to be cared and pampered. This is a misconception. Throughout the day he loiters around the house, drawing people’s attention. // Sometimes he watches a mouse hole as a pass time. His true nature is revealed as the evening falls. During tea-time, the cat purrs and rubs himself against the legs of the family members to get his share of food. He is civil to the guest only to have a bit of the best food served to him. H e does not even hesitate to create panic by scratching the guest if he does not get his share. He is intelligent enough to stay out of the guest’s reach as he well understands the result of irritating a person. After tea-time the cat goes to the backyard where the true cat-life begins where there are no pretensions. His movement is measured, staying away from his enemies. He calls his fellow mates and they have gallant adventures in the backyards which is their hunting ground. He loves to live in his homeland where all his friends are. So when the family moves out he accommodates himself with the new tenants, living life his own way.

সাধারণত ধরে নেওয়া হয় যে, বিড়াল একটি বুদ্ধিহীন প্রাণী যে আদরযত্ন পেতে ভালোবাসে। এটা কিন্তু ভুল ধারণা। সারাদিন ধরে বিড়াল বাড়িতে পায়চারি করে, লােকের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করে।
কখনো সে সময় কাটাতে ইঁদুরের গর্তের ওপর লক্ষা রাখে। তার তার আসল রূপ উন্মোচিত হয় সন্ধ্যাবেলায়।  চা পানের সময়, বিড়াল পরিবারের সদস্যদের সামনে মিউ মিউ করে ও তাদের পায়ে নিজের শরীর ঘষে তাদের খাবার থেকে ভাগ সংগ্রহ করবে বলে। সে অতিথির সঙ্গে ভদ্র ব্যবহার করে শুধুমাত্র তার থেকে সেরা খাবারের ভাগ নেবে বলে। এমনকি, ভাগ না পেলে সে অতিথিকে আঁচড়িয়ে ভয় দেখাতে ছাড়ে না। সে যথেষ্ট বুদ্ধিমান বলেই সে অতিথির নাগালের মধ্যে থাকে না কেননা সে জানে কোনো মানুষকে বিরক্ত করার কী পরিণাম হতে পারে। চা-পানের সময় অবতীর্ণ হলে বিড়াল বাড়ির পিছনদিকে চলে যায়, যেখানে শুরু হয় তার আসল বিড়াল-জীবন, যেখানে কোনো ভণিতা থাকে না। তার চলাচল হয় পরিমিত, সে চলাচল করে শত্রুদের নজর এড়িয়ে। সে তার স্বজাতীয়দের ডেকে নেয় এবং পিছনের জমিতে যা তাদের মতে শিকারের ভূমি, সেখানে শুরু হয় কিছু অসমসাহসী অভিযান। বিড়াল স্বদেশে স্বজনদের মাঝেই থাকতে পছন্দ করে। তাই যখন কোনো পরিবার সেই বাসস্থান ছেড়ে চলে যায়, বিড়াল থেকে যায় নতুন ভাড়াটেদের সঙ্গে বনিবনা করে নেয় ও নিজের মতো করে জীবন নির্বাহ করে।
