To grass, or leaf, or fruit, or wall,
The snail sticks close, nor fears to fall,
As if the grew there, house and all, 
Together.

Within that house secure he hides,
When danger imminent betides
Of storm, or other harm besides 
Of weather.

Give but his horns the slightest touch, 
His self-collecting power's is such, 
He shrinks into his house, with much 
Displeasure.

Where're he dwells, he dwells alone,
Except himself has chattels none, 
Well satisfied to be his own 
Whole treasure.

INTRODUCTION TO THE TEXT:

In the poem, ‘The Snail’, the poet describes the actions of a snail how it sticks to anything like a part of the object, and how it hides itself from the outside world. The snail’s displeasure any kind of intrusion into its extremely private life is also portrayed in the poem. It signifies the poet’s embracing of a loner’s life and withdrawal from the society.

[ দ্য স্নেল কবিতায় কবি একটি শামুকের কার্যকলাপ বর্ণনা করেছেন। কীভাবে এটি যে- কোনো কিছুর সঙ্গে সেঁটে থাকে সেই বস্তুটির অংশ হিসেবে এবং কীভাবে এটি বাইরের জগৎ থেকে নিজেকে লুকিয়ে রাখে। তার অতিমাত্রায় নিভৃত জীবনে যে-কোনো ধরনের অনধিকার প্রবেশে শামুকটির বিরক্তিও কবিতাটিতে চিত্রিত হয়েছে। এটি কবির একজন নিভৃতচারীর জীবনকে আলিঙ্গন করা এবং সমাজ থেকে নিজেকে সরিয়ে নেওয়াকে সূচিত করে। ]

SUBSTANCE OF THE  POEM ‘THE SNAIL’:

The snail is usually a tiny, insignificant creature that sticks very close to the grass, leaf, fruit or wall without any fear of falling down. The snail creeps through its passage in an almost imperceptible movement carrying the shell altogether. The shell of the snail is inseparable and it is his house providing safety and security. The prospect of any harm or an unfriendly situation sends an alarm to his sensitive horns and he shrinks into the safe zone of his house. The snail does not have any partner, nor does he have any belongings. He lives a secluded life, self reliant and self-satisfied like a hermit.

[ শামুক সাধারণত একটি ছােট্ট, নগণ্য জীব যা ঘাস, পাতা, ফল বা দেয়ালে দৃঢ়ভাবে আটকে থাকে, পড়ে যাওয়ার কোনো ভয় ছাড়াই। শামুকটি তার যাতায়াতের পথ ধরে প্রায় ইন্দ্রিয়ের অগোচর গতিতে বুকে হেঁটে চলে আবরণটি সঙ্গে নিয়ে। শামুকের খোলটি অবিচ্ছেদ্য এবং এটি তার ঘর যা তাকে ও নিরাপত্তা প্রদান করে। কোনো ক্ষতি বা প্রতিকূল অবস্থার সম্ভাবনা তার সংবেদনশীল শুঁড়ে বিপদসংকেত পাঠায় এবং সে তার ঘরের নিরাপত্তার মধ্যে গুটিয়ে যায়। শামুকের কোনো জুড়িদার নেই, না আছে তার কোনো অস্থাবর জিনিসপত্র। সে এক নিভৃত জীবন যাপন করে, একজন ঋষির মতো, আত্মনির্ভরশীল ও আত্ম-সন্তুষ্ট ]
