Read the Poem

I must down to the seas again, 
                       to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship 
                       and a star to steer her by; 
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song
                       and the white sail's shaking, 
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must down to the seas again, 
                          for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call
                           that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day
                            with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume,
                              and the sea-gulls crying.

I must down to the seas again,
                               to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way the wind’s
                               like a whetted knife; where
And all I ask is a merry yarn
                                 from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream
                                        when the long trick's over.

Substance of The Poem :
S EA FEVER

In the poem ‘Sea Fever the poet John Masefield expresses his strong desire to get back to the sea as the alluring call of the sea cannot be ignored. The poem portrays man’s eternal thirst to know the unknown and travel and explore nature’s beauty. The poet expresses his wish for the need of a sturdy ship to sail in the sea and a star to act as a guide in the darkness of night.

At the breaking of dawn, he wants to see the grey mist rise up from the sea. He also wishes that there would be strong winds making the white clouds fly. He wants to see the foamy waves and listen to the cry of sea-gulls. The last paragraph emphasises that the poet would want to be like a wandering gypsy. He would love to lister to entertaining tales from his fellow sailors and after the long journey he would like to have a good sleep and a sweet dream.

Critical appreciation of the Poem : SEA FEVER

The poem portrays man’s eternal thirst to know the unknown and travel and explore nature’s beauty. The poet expresses his wish for the need of a sturdy ship to sail in the sea and a star to act as a guide in the darkness of night. At the breaking of dawn, he wants to see the grey mist rise up from the sea. He also wishes that there would be strong winds making the white clouds fly. He wants to see the foamy waves and listen to the cry of sea-gulls. The last paragraph emphasises that the poet would want to be like a wandering gypsy. He would love to lister to entertaining tales from his fellow sailors and after the long journey he would like to have a good sleep and a sweet dream.

   ANS: The poet, before being a writer was a sailor by profession. Although he deserted the ship because of sickness, yet he could never forget the wonderful days spent on ship. He felt a deep urge within him to go back to the sea. That is why the word ‘again’ has been used.
   
2. What does the word ‘wheel’s kick’ refer to ?
   ANS: The word wheel’s kick’ refers to the ships steering wheel spinning out of control. It also suggests that the ship is sailing on a turbulent sea.
   
3. How does the poet describe the sea ?
   ANS: The poet has described the sea as turbulent. It is full of rolling waves spluttering and spraying water as it breaks down into foams.
   
4. What does the line the wind is like a whetted knife’ signify?
   ANS: The wind is like a whetted knife’ signifies the chilling sensation caused by the unrestricted blowing of cold winds. ‘Whetted’ means sharp. Hence the wind is so cold that cuts like a sharp knife.
   
5. Explain the line ‘And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over’.
   ANS: In this line the poet has wished for a happy ending to the sea journey. But the significance is grave Here, the poet has compared a sea voyage to a man’s life which is full of struggle and challenge and a positive culmination of that life, which means, a peaceful after life and eternal rest.
